hello doctheo...i am new in this forum....i have a question regarding an externship in california....i received my california status letter recently...was wondering if you have a list of hospitals where i can apply for an externship? any suggestion will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance....

REALLY??? can i ask where you're currently doing your externship? how about observership, are you aware of any hospitals here in CA which accommodate IMGs (with GC)? and do you have to have passed all exams (steps 1, 2, csa) to get into one? many thanks. |

The necessary requirements to apply for residency must have been accomplished. You must have an ECFMG certificate ( which means you passed setps 1 & 2 and the CSA). Then you must apply for a California Evaluation Status Letter. ( letter is required for all IMG's to apply for residency) If the letter from the California Medical Board states that you have a deficiency then you send a copy of this letter to the hospital I did my externship and they will arrange an externship for you. In my externship I had full hospital priviledge in actively managing patients. I performed at the level of a PGY 1. Whatever an intern can do I am also allowed to do.

But I'm still interested in getting into the IM Residency in California. Seriously, how long did it take for you to get that California Letter? Did you have any deficiency in your clerkships? Thanks |

pls, have a heart and email me where you had your externship: aia_8@juno.com. i want to do an elective rotation in I.M. or F.P. if possible.
i was able to contact 1 hospital (in the south) but it only offers a 4-week Psychiatry program. i may have a chance with this other hospital (again, in the south - NADA here in the northern part) , but they don't wanna commit yet. they evaluate applicants on a case-by-case basis ; have to call them back next month for their next available program . their priority of course is current US students, obviously. if they don't fill up all the positions (clerkship elective rotation), the coordinator told me that i may have a chance. but the final decision will be up to the PD. |

Dear Doctors,
Externships in California for IMG's are very rare. The state board requires a California letter and if this letter deems there are deficiencies in your transcript or school an externship maybe allowed in that specific deficiensy as an AI or 4th year medical student.
