You must be new to the system since your question is naive. But anyway, everyone has to start somewhere, I understand.
YOu can use J1 or H1 in your fellowship. Same as in residency. But you must be careful since the lifespan of J1 is 7 years and H1 is 6 years. But this should be ample time to finish your residency and your intended fellowship. Ofcourse, you need your ECFMG Certificate. YOu cannot start fellowship without residency, nor can you start residency sans ecfmg certificate. --Nirmal |

Nimral,
thank you for your response but some of my friends have finished residency in the PI and went on to do a fellowship in the US. What I know is that after the fellowship they will need to come back here to the PI. I wasn't sure what the current rules were for doing this. I know some did take the MLE's but I know that they didn't use the certificate for US residency, just a fellowship. Thanks again |

I have heard of those fellowships too, but they are indeed rare. And moreover, you cannot practice in the USA after your fellowship. Your chances are better if you finish your residency and then proceed to fellowship, either on J1 or H1. With J1, you can possibly get a waiver, albeit it is getting more tough now. With H1, you can have the hosp that will hire you to sponsor your green card, especially if that field of study is in dire demand. Demands do fluctutae, that is the problem. It is like a dog chasing its own tail scenario.
